THE LEGEND AND HAG OF SHAOLIN bucks the trend for mainland martial arts films by not being disappointing at all. The very awkward name and dubious comedy can't obscure the fact that this film features some absolutely banging fight choreography. It's some of the best kung fu action in years.

If it had been made in Hong Kong in 1993 it would be regarded as a classic (and the sound design would have won every award). It largely could have been, too. Apart from the precise movements afforded by modern digital cameras, it stays very true to the style and techniques of 90's Hong Kong action.

Unfortunately this also applies to the comedy, which could easily have come from Wong Jing's pen... not the most sophisticated humour, but the film is too fast-paced for it ever to become too much of a drag. You're never left waiting too long for the next electric fight to break out!
